Job Description

About the Role

The Arts Management Specialist supports UMBC's efforts to raise the visibility of its programs and public events in the visual and performing arts. They develop new audiences for events, strengthen engagement with existing audiences, and facilitate campus partnerships to ensure the success of public arts events. The role involves marketing, communications, and collaboration across various university departments to promote arts initiatives and enhance community engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce material designed to promote events and engage audiences, including advertising copy, feature stories, calendar posts, social media posts, and event descriptions.
  • Determine schedules for the development of digital and print advertising, working with an in-house graphic design team, and ensure the timely delivery of those assets to external advertising outlets.
  • Pitch events and story ideas to local and regional media.
  • Create and implement strategies to develop internal and external audiences, including the campus community and the greater Baltimore area, including K-12 students.
  • Facilitate the success of visits by visual and performing artists by working with them and/or their representatives to ensure contractual needs are fulfilled.
  • Provide expertise to arts departments and centers to ensure the success of their public events, and establish and monitor workflows that ensure artist and event information flows from those departments and centers to communications, marketing, and advancement staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Five years of experience working in marketing or communications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously

Nice to Have

  • Master's degree in arts administration, an arts discipline, or a related field
  • Five years experience working in marketing or communications for an arts or cultural organization
  • Experience working in an arts or cultural organization
  • Experience in audience development in the visual and performing arts
  • Understanding of contemporary art and cultural trends
  • Advertising and email copywriting experience

Qualifications

  • Educational background includes a Bachelor's degree; a Master's degree is preferred
  • Minimum of five years of relevant experience in marketing or communications
