About the Role

The Assistant Director of Public Relations/Social Media at Laredo College will work collaboratively with the Community and Media Relations Office (CMRO) Director, senior leadership, faculty, and staff to develop and implement public relations and social media strategies. The role involves supervising the Public Relations/Social Media team, generating publicity, promoting college programs and objectives, and maintaining media and community relationships to enhance the institution's image.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the CMRO Director and VPIA to ensure the College's mission, branding, and image are positively represented across all media relations.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive public relations strategies and campaigns to promote the institution's brand, programs, and services.
  • Oversee daily operations, set objectives, and monitor performance of the Public Relations/Social Media team.
  • Supervise and assist the Social Media Specialist in managing social media accounts and promoting student-centered events.
  • Create and execute promotional campaigns and develop media relations strategies for high-level media placements.
  • Produce news releases, media advisories, feature articles, and other written materials for distribution to media and partners.
  • Develop talking points for college leadership on specific topics.
  • Supervise website content updates and manage information and images on the college's website.
  • Build and maintain relationships with media outlets, journalists, and influencers to generate positive coverage.
  • Gather information, conduct interviews, and take photographs for newsletters and media content.
  • Support coverage of college events from a public relations, marketing, and social media perspective.
  • Assist with proofreading materials and collaborate with graphic design teams.
  • Stay current with industry trends and recommend proactive strategies to address emerging issues.
  • Lead collaboration with other departments to develop impactful social media and PR campaigns.
  • Prioritize tasks to ensure team efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Coordinate with the Public Information Officer and Risk Management team on crisis communication.
  • Support the Development Office by sharing multimedia content to strengthen external relationships.
  • Create and manage a calendar of events and campaigns.
  • Maintain records of media coverage and monitor news links.
  • Work with the IT Department to maintain website highlights, news sections, and analytics.
  • Oversee and mentor PR team members, including specialists and student employees.
  • Assist with marketing campaigns, recruitment, and special events promoting the college.
  • Support photography and video content creation for publications and promotions.
  • Assign projects to team members and ensure timely completion.
  • Review projects for quality and branding consistency.
  • Manage the CMRO request portal and ensure project deadlines are met.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the CMRO Director and VPIA.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with major coursework in English, Journalism, Communications, Business, or related area.
  • Five or more years of experience requiring extensive writing, desktop publishing, photography, or similar skills, or 10 years of direct experience in the field.
  • Experience in copy editing, news media, and social media management.
  • Valid Driver's License and current car insurance for travel as required.
  • Must abide by applicable laws, rules, and policies while driving on College District business.

Nice to Have

  • Master's degree in Communications, Public Relations, or related field.
  • Previous experience in higher education.
  • Knowledge of public relations and communications.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in using MS Office Suite, Zoom, TEAMS, One Drive, Google Drive, and internet tools.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Technical skills in writing, editing, photography, and web-based applications.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging technology for print and electronic communication.
  • Vast knowledge in social media management.
  • Basic knowledge in video editing, photography editing, and related content creation.
