Job Description

About the Role

The NEA Media Intern position is part of the NEA Internship Program within the Center for Communications, Media Strategy department. It offers students and recent graduates the opportunity to gain experience in public education policy, media relations, and communications through a variety of activities including research, media material creation, social media management, and participation in organizational events. The internship is located at NEA Headquarters in Washington, DC, and may be on-site, hybrid, or virtual. Interns will receive training, educational activities, and exposure to programmatic experiences that support public education advocacy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft media materials and pitch reporters
  • Staff media interviews and conduct open source research on media channels
  • Maintain reporter database and monitor social media channels for NEA's media team
  • Draft and distribute tweets for @NEAMedia
  • Cut and edit broadcast media clips
  • Prepare PowerPoint decks for various trainings
  • Participate in NEA-sponsored activities such as interviews, policy forums, and organizational events
  • Assist with organizing or lobbying activities and participate in events like Washington DC Intern Week

Requirements

  • Strong organization skills and ability to work under deadline pressure
  • Experience with keyboarding and using social media platforms
  • Writing and editing skills
  • Ability to learn and use media databases
  • Interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and sit for long periods
  • Skills in proofreading, editing, reasoning, and problem solving
  • Ability to travel via various transportation methods

Nice to Have

  • Experience in media, journalism, communications, or related fields
  • Interest in public education policy and advocacy
  • Experience with organizing tools and strategies
  • Interviewing skills

Qualifications

  • Students pursuing degrees in Education, Political Science, Government, Human Resources, Public Policy, Social Sciences, Business, Finance, Economics, Management, Communications, Computer Science, Journalism, Mass Media, Graphic Design, Digital Communications, or related disciplines
  • Recent college graduates (up to 18 months) or graduate students
