About the Role

The Associate Director of Data Engineering, Business Insights & Technology (BI&T) for Bristol Myers Squibb's Global Product Development and Supply (GPS) division plays a crucial role in advancing the company's vision to transform patients' lives through science. This leadership role oversees the GPS BI&T Data Engineering Team, ensuring data availability for analytics systems, processes, and personnel. The position involves strategizing, building, and operationalizing data pipelines, partnering with stakeholders, managing a team of technologists, and delivering impactful technology solutions in a global, regulated environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define data engineering goals in partnership with GPS stakeholders and GPS BI&T leadership, monitor progress, and adjust strategy as needed.
  • Lead the GPS BI&T Data Engineering team with a visionary approach, ensuring delivery of innovative data engineering programs.
  • Provide regular updates on technical progress to stakeholders and BI&T leaders.
  • Build and manage a high-performing Data Engineering team, including direct management of 6 professionals in the USA and Europe and matrix leadership of other global team members.
  • Lead planning, diversity efforts, and colleague development initiatives to sustain a robust talent pipeline.
  • Develop, manage, and deliver a forward-thinking technology roadmap for Data Engineering leveraging emerging technologies.
  • Partner with GPS stakeholders to incorporate data 'art of the possible' into the team's strategy and roadmap.
  • Experiment with emerging technologies such as AI and scale solutions to deliver measurable business value.
  • Ensure adherence to technical best practices in SDLC, DevOps, and analytics output, including scalable solutions and documentation standards.
  • Evaluate new technologies and recommend impactful innovations for the GPS technology roadmap.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with GPS business stakeholders, BI&T teams, and cross-functional colleagues across global locations.
  • Work closely with leadership to define data engineering priorities and deliver solutions aligned with business objectives.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in Information Technology, data analytics, or pharmaceutical/healthcare industries, with a proven track record of leadership and innovation.
  • 5+ years in a leadership role managing teams or delivering IT or analytics programs.
  • Hands-on experience with SDLC methodologies, including DevOps, Agile, and Waterfall, in regulated environments.
  • Experience with programming languages relevant to data pipelines such as Python, Java, or Scala.
  • Experience with cloud computing environments and services, preferably AWS.
  • Experience with ELT processes and building high-performance data layers.
  • Knowledge of data streaming technologies like Kafka.
  • Proficiency with analytics tools such as GitHub, SQL, R, dbt, Domino, Tableau.
  • Experience with building and operationalizing predictive models, AI solutions, or simulation frameworks is a plus.
  • Strong leadership skills, including team management, collaboration, and project delivery.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative or scientific discipline; advanced degrees preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively in a matrixed organization and across global locations.
  • Occasional travel to BMS locations worldwide.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with biopharma product development, manufacturing operations, supply chain, or quality controls.
  • Experience with graph database technology.
  • Hands-on experience with agile tools like JIRA.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a quantitative or scientific discipline is required.
  • Advanced degrees (MS or Ph.D.) in relevant fields are preferred.
