About the Role

The United Nations is seeking a creative, motivated, and detail-oriented Graphic Design Intern at the New York Headquarters. This internship offers an opportunity to contribute to the Organization's internal and external communication efforts, focusing on diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and global employer marketing. The intern will gain hands-on experience in all stages of employer marketing content development within a vibrant, diverse, and multicultural environment, working under the supervision of a Human Resources Officer in the Global Strategy and Policy Division (GSPD), Office of Human Resources (OHR), Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance (DMSPC).

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting with the design and production of a wide variety of visual content, including publications, websites, blogs, email campaigns, social media assets, brochures, presentations, advertisements, event materials, posters, banners, flyers, infographics, and other brand-enhancing communication products.
  • Participating in the full design workflow process: developing concepts, storyboards, and drafts; receiving and incorporating feedback from team leads and senior stakeholders; updating content; finalizing layouts for production; and contributing to project evaluations.
  • Supporting the development and layout of PowerPoint presentations, newsletters, reports, and other communication products.
  • Researching and preparing content for printed and digital materials, including content for layout and translation.
  • Assisting with the maintenance and updates of internal and external websites, as well as social media channels.
  • Supporting event coordination, outreach activities, announcements, and the preparation of supplementary communications materials.
  • Exploring opportunities to assist with video editing and sound design for digital media projects.
  • Contributing to the promotion of accessibility in graphic design and communication products, following organizational branding, style, and accessibility guidelines.
  • Attending project briefings and reporting on workflow and project statuses; actively participating in project meetings and collaborative sessions with team leads, social media, event management, digital media, and Member State coordination teams.
  • Staying current with trends and best practices in graphic design, communications, marketing, and accessibility, and offering input on design approaches for campaigns.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher), or be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent).
  • Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master's or Ph.D. Programme or have completed such a programme.
  • Ability to use graphic design tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Canva, Figma, etc is desirable.
  • Ability to create visual content for social media, websites, publications, or presentations is desirable.
  • Support for event coordination, outreach activities, or the preparation of communication materials such as flyers, banners, or announcements is desirable.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required; knowledge of an additional UN official language is an advantage.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in or completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher), or in the final year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent).
  • Official certificate required at a later stage.

  • This internship is unpaid; costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
  • Interns work up to five days per week (35 hours) in the office or remotely, depending on circumstances.
