About the Role

This role is based in either the San Francisco or Silicon Valley office of A&O Shearman, a global industry-leading law firm with 48 offices in 28 countries. The firm specializes in English law, US law, and laws of dynamic markets, providing insight and seamless delivery to clients. The Business Development Manager - California will support and implement business development and marketing strategies for the firm's California offices, working closely with partners and teams across the firm to grow revenues, expand client relationships, and support firm initiatives. Key Responsibilities

  • Understand the vision and overall business development objectives of California partners.
  • Work closely with respective partners to define, develop, and deliver the business development strategy for California and other initiatives as needed.
  • Drive the implementation of regional business plans, including target client list development and progress monitoring.
  • Analyze and report on the firm's market share, client segmentation, and competitive position in the region.
  • Conduct market research on existing and prospective clients, monitoring regional, client, and industry news to identify work origination opportunities.
  • Analyze existing client relationships to identify cross-selling opportunities across practice groups and sectors.
  • Facilitate regular meetings with key partners to identify opportunities, raise profile, and coordinate client targeting activities.
  • Work with partners to drive issues-based marketing campaigns tailored for the region and clients.
  • Ensure marketing collateral aligns with the firm’s business development strategy.
  • Project manage panel pitches and other strategic pitches, providing regional input as needed.
  • Identify industry events and conferences, plan client events and seminars, and work with the events team for delivery.
  • Collaborate with the communications team to maximize press coverage and profile-raising opportunities.
  • Ensure priority client matters are included in awards and directory submissions, and assist with drafting submissions and nominations.
  • Perform other projects and duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of legal or professional services experience in a high-profile, fast-paced environment; experience in California preferred but not required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with high attention to detail and strong client focus.
  • Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills, including selling concepts and presenting to senior management.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple conflicting deadlines.
  • Proven track record of achieving strategic business objectives and managing resources for projects.
  • Experience with budgeting and writing business cases is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Bachelor's degree required.
