Job Description

About the Role

As a Commercial Analyst Trainee, you will be assigned to one of five commodity groups within the Marketing department, including Industrial Products, Business Development, Intermodal & Automotive, Intermodal Operations, and First & Final Mile Markets. The role involves participating in a 24-week training program with departmental rotations across Finance, Transportation, Marketing, Operations, and more. You will support Norfolk Southern in developing market analyses, business review processes, forecasting, and business development efforts, while gaining comprehensive knowledge of company functions, policies, and industry operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Understand each department's (e.g., Marketing, Transportation) daily processes and goals.
  • Participate in high-functioning teams with fellow trainees to craft and deliver presentations on various departments' functions and roles.
  • Contribute in meetings, workshops, and other learning opportunities.
  • Observe and learn from experienced staff members.
  • Gain knowledge of company policies, protocols, and processes.
  • Travel to different cities where Norfolk Southern operates and participate in daily operations as required.
  • Provide accurate revenue analysis, volume forecasts, and supplemental analyses including macro-economic trends and drivers within Norfolk Southern's markets.
  • Conduct research studies to deliver actionable business intelligence to team members and senior management.
  • Develop or improve pricing strategies while maintaining customer satisfaction.
  • Identify problem areas and generate solutions that impact business growth.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree.
  • Proficient in MS Office, with an emphasis on Excel.
  • Solid interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with team members, leadership, and customers.
  • A self-starter willing to learn about the commodity, external factors influencing pricing, and interact with industry experts.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data to provide innovative solutions.
  • Understanding of external factors that influence pricing.
  • Eagerness to learn how the railroad operates from top to bottom and expand knowledge and perspective.
  • Extensive time management skills.

Nice to Have

  • Majors in Economics, Data Analytics, Management, Finance, Marketing, International Business, Statistics, or similar fields.

Qualifications

  • Educational background in relevant fields such as Economics, Data Analytics, Management, Finance, Marketing, International Business, or Statistics.
