About the Role

The Tennessean is seeking an experienced Community Engagement and Opinion Editor to join the leadership team at our 118-year-old Nashville institution. The role involves shaping and amplifying opinion content, engaging with the community through various outreach efforts, and collaborating with Gannett's opinion team to produce high-quality, impactful journalism that resonates with the audience across Middle Tennessee. The candidate will play a pivotal role in guiding opinion journalism and fostering community dialogue, both through written content and public engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with The Tennessean's executive editor and Gannett's opinion leaders to develop and execute a comprehensive content strategy aligned with the company's mission and audience engagement goals.
  • Write columns and work with contributing writers and columnists at The Tennessean.
  • Manage a rotation of opinion interns on a semester or annual basis.
  • Curate, edit, and oversee the publication of opinion pieces that are thought-provoking, well-researched, and aligned with the publication's editorial voice.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Audience Engagement to ensure opinion content effectively engages the digital audience.
  • Develop and manage an editorial calendar to plan content creation and ensure timely coverage of key topics and events.
  • Foster collaboration with departments such as Audience Engagement, Marketing, and Digital Production to maximize reach and impact.
  • Help plan and participate in community events focused on journalism and issues impacting the community.
  • Ensure all published content meets high editorial and ethical standards, adhering to copyright, plagiarism, and fact-checking policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in journalism, with a focus on opinion writing and editing.
  • Proven experience in editorial leadership and managing a team of writers.
  • Strong writing, editing, and fact-checking skills.
  • Deep knowledge of current events, politics, and social issues.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of journalism experience.
