About the Role

The College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences (CHASS) at the University of Detroit Mercy invites applications for the role of Writing Center Content and Outreach Coordinator, a part-time, 9-month staff position focused on expanding the impact of the Writing Center at the University of Detroit Mercy. The position involves creating learning and marketing materials, contributing to strategic planning, providing development sessions to students, and engaging in outreach efforts to promote Writing Center services. The role supports student success and professional development within a vibrant, student-centered community that serves the entire university.

Key Responsibilities

  • Writing new content for learning resources such as brochures and handouts.
  • Creating multi-modal content for marketing and promoting the Writing Center's services via online channels.
  • Assisting the Director with strategic planning for the future of the Writing Center, including researching trends in pedagogy, writing center theory, and teaching with technology.
  • Engaging in outreach efforts by providing learning sessions to the campus community.
  • Developing new relationships with stakeholders to create collaboration opportunities.
  • Participating in campus events.
  • Engaging in scholarship and professional development.

Requirements

  • A master's degree or MFA from an accredited higher education institution.
  • At least one year working in a Writing Center as a tutor, consultant, or administrator.
  • An understanding of writing center theory and practice.
  • Experience teaching first-year college writing courses.
  • Experience creating engaged, student-centered learning sessions.
  • Basic design skills to produce pamphlets, handouts, and presentations.
  • Experience using Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
  • The ability to collaborate with and mentor student consultants.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills.

Nice to Have

  • Experience using the Blackboard Learning Management System or similar.
  • Knowledge of social media applications to share learning content.
  • Experience using Camtasia or similar video editing software.
  • Experience teaching English Language Learners.
  • Fluency in a language or languages other than English.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree or MFA from an accredited higher education institution.
  • At least one year of experience working in a Writing Center as a tutor, consultant, or administrator.
