Job Description

About the Role

The Wall Street Journal is seeking a Deputy Director of Content Strategy to work at the center of our audience-first mission. You will help steer a team in developing content strategy for a newsroom focused on creating distinctive journalism that engages subscribers and attracts new audiences. You will serve as both a catalyst for cultural transformation—fostering new ways of thinking and doing things—and a translator of actionable insights to infuse audience-first thinking into coverage. In our fast-paced, global newsroom, you’ll balance rapid recommendations during breaking news with long-term strategic initiatives that reinforce the Journal’s position as the definitive source for business-minded audiences. This role is based in New York and reports to the Director of Content Strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Director of Content Strategy in establishing priorities for the team and ensuring we act with urgency to deliver impact in the newsroom.
  • Lead and mentor a high-performing team of audience strategists and editors.
  • Cultivate a culture of experimentation, data-driven decision-making and cross-functional collaboration, including coverage, audience development, operations, product and marketing.
  • Translate newsroom priorities into clear, measurable content strategies.
  • Champion analytics across the newsroom and turn audience data into actionable insights.
  • Present to senior leaders and share learnings broadly to inform coverage.
  • Launch and shepherd deep-dive content analyses that shape and plan coverage, and answer strategic questions about and beyond coverage.
  • Anticipate emerging news trends and innovate story formats—text, live blogs, visuals, video, podcasts and other mediums—to maximize impact and keep coverage ahead of the curve.
  • Relentlessly advocate for the needs of our audiences.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in digital newsrooms with expertise in editorial strategy and some combination of audience development, analytics, reporting and editing, video and audio, production, or project management.
  • Proven ability to lead teams that achieve substantial audience growth and boost subscriber engagement.
  • Exceptional analytical skills—adept at extracting insights from data, crafting clear narratives for news leaders, and recommending actionable solutions.
  • Expertise with web analytics tools; SQL, Python, or other data-analysis languages are a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with a talent for influencing senior stakeholders and driving cross-departmental alignment.
  • Demonstrated success in building trust, collaborating effectively, and forging consensus across teams.
  • Deep understanding of and passion for the competitive digital-news media landscape.
  • Self-starter comfortable identifying challenges and opportunities, with the drive to develop and implement solutions.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with SQL, Python, or other data-analysis languages.

Qualifications

  • Educational background is not explicitly specified in the description.

Benefits & Perks

  • Competitive salary range of $140,000 - $170,000.
  • Comprehensive and highly competitive benefits package, including physical health, retirement and savings, caregiving, emotional wellbeing, transportation, and other benefits.
  • Flexible compensation offers tailored to experience, industry knowledge, location, skills, and other relevant factors.
  • Pay-for-performance strategy to attract, engage, and motivate talented people.
