The Director, Social Media supports the implementation and execution of a social media strategy that engages the Society's Explorer community and leverages their work, discoveries, assets, impact, and contributions across the organization's channels. This role leads a team that collaborates directly with Explorers to create engaging content tailored for each platform, distinct from the social media content managed through the Society's media partnership with The Walt Disney Company. The position reports to the Chief Communications Officer and is part of the Communications Division at the National Geographic Society, which develops integrated communications strategies to promote the Society's mission, Explorer-led programs, and key priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the implementation and execution of an annual social media strategy that centers on contributions from the Society's Explorer community, ensuring content is appropriate for the Society's owned platforms and distinct from broader distribution via the Disney partnership.
  • Build an environment within the Explorer Community and the Society for successful strategy execution, including engaging with Explorers and coordinating with operational teams such as Legal and Business Affairs for necessary agreements, clearances, and rights.
  • Identify existing assets and direct the development of new content to support the amplification of Explorers on the Society's social media channels.
  • Collaborate with marketing functions to ensure seamless paid social campaigns and develop strategies for recognizing philanthropic partnerships.
  • Lead and manage the social media team, set responsibilities and expectations, develop and manage the budget, foster innovation, mentor staff, and establish KPIs to assess impact.
  • Develop and recommend strategies and policies for senior management consideration.
  • Leverage enterprise tools for social listening, monitor and report on content and conversations about the Society, Explorers, and relevant topics.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of social media experience and 3+ years of management experience.
  • Deep understanding of social media platforms and strategies.
  • Strong ability to direct social media workflow from strategy through final production.
  • Proven success in leading social media teams.
  • Ability to prioritize workflows with attention to detail and manage multiple projects under deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of modern social media business, including industry trends and opportunities.
  • Demonstrated experience in leveraging multimedia to increase engagement.

Nice to Have

  • Experience executing social media strategies for a complex nonprofit organization.
  • Experience sourcing compelling stories, content, and assets from a community of contributors.
  • Management and mentorship abilities that encourage professional growth and collaboration.
  • Active social media user with deep familiarity with platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and Facebook.
  • Deep experience with social media tools, including monitoring, analytics, project management, calendaring, and planning tools.
  • Humility, creativity, and leadership skills to serve as a unifying force across teams.
  • Interest in science, storytelling, education, and conservation of cultural and natural resources.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.

Benefits & Perks

  • Competitive and holistic total rewards package.
  • Salary range of $137,700.00 - $145,000.00, based on experience and qualifications.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Wellness programs and 401(k) retirement plan with matching contributions after 6 months.
  • Flexible paid time off, up to 22 days of paid annual leave, 10 days of sick leave, and 12 paid holidays.
  • Paid winter break, parental leave, adoption and surrogacy expense reimbursement, fertility benefits.
  • Learning and development opportunities, Lifestyle Spending Account, pet adoption assistance and insurance.
