Job Description

About the Role

The Manager, Data and Analytics will design, implement and manage the maintenance of solutions that direct business operations, data engineering, analytics and platforms. This position manages data migrations, infrastructure, enterprise data architecture and designs an environment that will support operations efficiency. The role involves collaborating with stakeholders, managing data-focused projects, and ensuring secure and compliant data practices within a utility company dedicated to providing reliable, affordable power and sustainable energy solutions in Alaska.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement scalable cloud, hybrid and on-premises data architectures that meet business and technical requirements.
  • Manage migration of legacy data environments to cloud-based platforms.
  • Implement and manage business intelligence (BI) platforms.
  • Manage data focused projects and collaborate with stakeholders to deliver actionable analytics solutions.
  • Manage database administration activities, including security compliance.
  • Direct strategies to translate raw data into business insights.
  • Manage enterprise-wide data governance, including data lifecycle management, data classification, data quality standards, and retention recommendations.
  • Develop reusable data models and semantic layers for self-service business units.
  • Coordinate with application teams to integrate analytics functionality into operational systems.
  • Partner with Cybersecurity to ensure alignment between analytics infrastructure and cybersecurity policies.
  • Evaluate and recommend data-focused technologies and vendors to support scalable, secure, and value-driven analytics initiatives.
  • Participate in IT capital and operational budget preparation.
  • Lead organizational change management efforts related to data initiatives.
  • Manage relationships with internal teams and external vendors, including cloud solution providers and data governance tool consultants.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in information systems, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Data Architecture, or similar.
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible IT experience, including supervisory experience, with data architecture or data engineering.
  • Expertise in cloud and on-premises data architecture.
  • Proficiency with Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and cloud platforms.
  • Experience with BI solutions, data insights, data modeling and dashboard development.
  • Effective project management and technical leadership skills.
  • Proven communication and organizational skills.
  • Experience in a utility, retail or banking environment is preferred.
  • Management experience in a union environment is preferred.
  • Experience implementing analytics platforms and supporting cross-functional data use in operational decision-making is preferred.

  • Advanced degree in a related field.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity needs and operational value of various data types.
  • Working knowledge of data governance platforms and metadata management.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead organizational information management initiatives.
  • Vendor management and contract negotiation skills.
