Job Description

About the Role

This role manages, plans, promotes, organizes, and administers the Department of Recreation marketing for all programs, events, and activities. This position also manages special events within the City of Charleston's Recreation Department, working to ensure coordinated marketing efforts, community engagement, and effective event execution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manages operations, including planning and scheduling special events, registration, hiring and scheduling staff members, budgeting, procuring necessary supplies and equipment, and working with the appropriate Recreation Department employees to market the programs to the public.
  • Selects, develops, and supervises paid staff and volunteers.
  • Coordinates the equipment, supplies, and set-up for all special events.
  • Prepares the budget and directs the expenditure of funds and the keeping of department records.
  • Interprets recreation programs to the public and maintains cooperative planning and working relationships with allied public and voluntary agencies.
  • Serves as technical adviser to managing authority and as recreation consultant to the community.
  • Creates and implements all marketing efforts including website, emails, flyers, constant contact, biannual brochures, and print materials for the Department of Recreation.
  • Oversees sponsorship efforts to attract and maintain business partners.
  • Participates in community meetings and organizational planning to interpret recreation services.
  • Works on a team with other recreation personnel to ensure balanced, coordinated, and integrated recreation services.
  • Serves as the main point of contact for Recreation Department recruitment efforts, developing marketing materials and attending job fairs and community events.
  • Develops a comprehensive marketing plan for the entire department and ensures consistent implementation across locations.
  • Collaborates with the Executive Communications team to align city-wide marketing efforts.
  • Develops and executes a comprehensive special events plan and schedule for the department.
  • Attends recreation, city, and community events to promote offerings.
  • Acts as the main contact for community groups regarding events and programs, attending neighborhood and community meetings.
  • Responds to inquiries via websites and social media messages.
  • Supervises multiple employees including the Recreation Marketing & Special Events Specialist, interns, and support technicians.
  • Ensures program content accuracy in WebTrac and supervises staff at special and marketing events.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree (BA/BS) and 2 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid South Carolina Driver's License.
  • CPR certification.
  • First Aid certification.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Outlook, Excel, and Word or similar software.
  • Experience managing social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, etc.).

Nice to Have

  • Master's degree in related field.
  • Certified Park and Recreation (CPRP) Professional.

  • CPR Certification
  • First Aid Certification
  • Valid South Carolina Driver's License
