Job Description

About the Role

The Markets and Trade (M&T) Analyst supports FEWS NET's food security analysis, early warning, and decision support related to markets and prices of staple foods, cash crops, livestock, labor, and more. The role involves analyzing market trends, preparing technical reports, maintaining economic indicator databases, and providing technical support to FEWS NET offices and partners. The analyst works within a team based in Washington, D.C., with potential for remote work and travel, and collaborates closely with various technical teams to ensure timely and accurate market analysis for food security monitoring across approximately 40 countries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide M&T related analysis to support food security early warning in a portfolio of countries, including monthly reporting and ad hoc requests.
  • Liaise with M&T staff and FEWS NET DS Team members to ensure timely publication of reports on staple food market trends, including Price Watch and Annex.
  • Provide technical oversight to produce staple food supply and market outlook reports.
  • Assist home, regional, and country office teams with market and policy analysis relevant to food insecurity and early warning, including remote or in-person travel as needed.
  • Participate in reviews of price projections and forecasting accuracy, and incorporate learning into sector methods and products.
  • Conduct literature reviews, analyze data, and draft reports on market trends and policies in collaboration with technical teams.
  • Liaise with research institutions to support market-related research relevant to food insecurity early warning.
  • Support timely delivery of decision support products, respond to urgent questions, and contribute to acute food insecurity analysis requests.
  • Support collection, organization, and storage of primary and secondary data for FEWS NET Data, Knowledge, and Learning Hub, including liaising with project staff and partners.
  • Coordinate with country and regional offices for monthly M&T meetings, including planning, documentation, and follow-up.
  • Assist in implementing other M&T activities as outlined in the annual work plan or as needed.
  • Contribute to early identification of emerging markets and trade crises, and re-orient work plans to address sudden analysis needs.
  • Collaborate with partners and the wider FEWS NET network under the guidance of the M&T advisor.

Requirements

  • Minimum three years of relevant experience in food security information systems, analysis, early warning, or related fields; experience with UN agencies or NGOs is desirable.
  • Bachelor's degree in economics, agricultural economics, agronomy, nutrition, climatology, anthropology, social geography, or a related discipline; master's preferred.
  • Fluency in English required; proficiency in French, Spanish, and/or Arabic is desirable.
  • Experience building and using large databases for market trend analysis using quantitative and qualitative methods.
  • Experience in market analysis, including reviewing and analyzing complex data on trade, prices, and production.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including remote communication with field-based staff.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
  • Experience with database management and Adobe Creative Suite is desirable.
  • Familiarity with ESRI ArcGIS mapping and statistical software is desirable.
  • Experience working on USG-funded activities is desirable.

Nice to Have

  • Experience living and working in regions or countries where FEWS NET operates.
  • Experience supporting market assessments for emergency response or food supply chain mapping.
  • Experience with online and offline analytical tools and data domains.
  • Experience with data quality improvement and data integrity support.
  • Knowledge of security considerations for international travel.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline; master's preferred.
  • Minimum three years of relevant experience.
