About the Role

The Principal Database Architect at Zoom is responsible for defining and driving impactful projects that enhance product features, reduce costs, improve database performance, increase reliability, and strengthen security. This role involves working across teams to establish database management norms and driving automation improvements. The team leads the technical direction for Databases and Database Administration at Zoom, serving as a vital bridge between DevOps teams and their database operations across multiple data centers and cloud environments.

Key Responsibilities

Guiding projects that deliver automation, improve monitoring, and enhance the DBA teams' ability to manage databases in both data centers and clouds at scale
Identifying opportunities for reducing costs and driving them to completion through optimization, cloud resource use, database tuning, or collaboration with partner teams
Standardizing the database stack and ensuring consistent practices across all teams, such as backup frequency and recovery test cadence
Driving projects that improve the security posture for database assets
Influencing the technical direction across teams inside and outside of DevOps
Communicating with partner teams and stakeholders to understand their needs and define projects that meet those needs
Ensuring mature software development practices, including code quality, testing, and CI/CD within DBA teams

Requirements

15 years of experience as a Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) or DevOps Engineer
Proven track record in technical leadership roles
Deep experience with Database administration
Experience with various database technologies including both SQL and NoSQL (e.g., Aurora, DynamoDB, MySQL, MongoDB)
Experience with cloud providers such as AWS and OCI, and cloud infrastructure technologies like Terraform and Kubernetes
Proficiency in at least one programming language in addition to scripting languages
Flexibility, a positive attitude, quick learning ability in a dynamic environment, proactive, accountable, and creative thinking
Availability to guide deployments and incident responses after hours or on weekends when needed

Nice to Have

Experience with cloud infrastructure technologies such as Terraform and Kubernetes
Experience with multiple cloud providers (e.g., AWS, OCI)
