The Senior Data Engineer will join a high-performing team responsible for building foundational datasets and pipelines, as well as the infrastructure that supports them, across all Appian business functions including sales, finance, marketing, people, and product. The role involves partnering with business stakeholders to understand their data and analytics needs and collaborating with business intelligence developers to deliver metrics and KPIs to support decision-making. This position is based at our headquarters in McLean, Virginia, where in-person collaboration is valued to foster culture and teamwork.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate discovery and requirement gathering sessions and build productive partnerships with various business stakeholders to understand their data needs for reporting and analytics.
  • Translate business logic into actionable artifacts like source to target mapping, data integration patterns, etc.
  • Develop data pipelines using tools such as Informatica Cloud, Python and SQL to ingest, transform and manipulate data for analysis and reporting purposes.
  • Maintain existing pipelines and implement enhancements.
  • Provide data modeling and data architecture recommendations to ensure core data assets are managed and governed as per enterprise standards.
  • Analyze various disparate (internal/external) data sources and document findings.
  • Clearly articulate data acquisition, integration strategies along with inherent risks with each strategy.
  • Drive standards in data reliability, data integrity, and data governance, enabling accurate, consistent, and trustworthy data.
  • Be a technical advisor and subject matter expert on the effective use of data modeling practices, data analytics, and optimal data architecture.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to high-quality standards.
  • Collaborate with a team of data engineers and BI developers to deliver data services covering various business domains.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in a data/software engineering role, with a focus on building and maintaining data pipelines and automating data availability and accuracy.
  • Experience building high quality ETL/ELT pipelines using cloud-based tools such as Informatica Cloud (preferred), Fivetran, SSIS, etc.
  • Experience with cloud-based data technologies such as BigQuery, Redshift, Snowflake, Databricks or similar.
  • Expert knowledge of SQL, Python and integration with APIs.
  • Domain knowledge covering areas including finance, sales, marketing, etc.
  • Experience developing data products to drive data science and machine learning initiatives.
  • Knowledge of data visualization tools such as Tableau, MS Power BI or Looker.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent degree.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with cloud-based data technologies such as BigQuery, Redshift, Snowflake, Databricks or similar.
  • Experience developing data products to drive data science and machine learning initiatives.
  • Knowledge of data visualization tools such as Tableau, MS Power BI or Looker.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent degree.
