About the Role

The Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for furthering the mission and strategic efforts of the university, as a distinctly Lutheran Christian University of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, through Christ-centered excellence in marketing and communication. This includes building, leading, and supporting a team of professionals responsible for assessing, developing, and implementing the overall marketing strategy for the University and has the primary goals of ensuring a strong, growing, and compelling brand identity grounded in our distinctly Lutheran and Christian mission and ministry, developing strategic marketing initiatives, maximizing undergraduate and graduate recruitment success, supporting alumni relations, and maintaining mission alignment and Christ-centered messaging in all external media and public relations efforts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maximizes outreach, influence and support among external audiences within the framework of CUNE's mission, values and strategic plan.
  • Leads and manages the staff of the marketing and communication team to effectively integrate marketing efforts across campus.
  • Collaborates with all campus departments to ensure consistent marketing goals and the effective use of planning, data and evaluation to maximize results.
  • Plans, develops, oversees and assesses the implementation of comprehensive, organization-wide goals for marketing the university, including profiling existing and potential customers and creating strategies to meet their needs.
  • Creates and executes a marketing strategy that gathers and uses data to make decisions and drive results.
  • Directs digital efforts to focus the university's website and digital platforms as communication, relationship building and recruitment tools.
  • Develops messages appropriate to students, parents, influencers, donors, volunteers, friends and constituents.
  • Oversees budgeting, staff, production and distribution of all integrated marketing activities.
  • Researches and implements technology and new media tools to improve results.
  • Analyzes and reports ROI for marketing efforts to senior leadership.
  • Provides leadership and counsel to the COO & President in refining and communicating the university's brand and messaging.
  • Oversees the development, delivery and analysis of market research to identify promotional opportunities, product enhancements and pricing strategies.
  • Coordinates internal communication and messaging with senior leadership.
  • Serves as the campus public relations spokesperson as necessary.
  • Supports university leaders in effective internal and external messaging regarding strategic planning and high-priority projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communication or marketing field required; master's degree preferred.
  • At least five years of experience in marketing or communications related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years in managing and leading a team.
  • Experience managing/leading project management tools and processes.
  • Experience with editing and writing for print publications.
  • Proficiency in the use of software applications including Microsoft applications, databases, spreadsheets and word processing.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with a diverse constituency.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
  • Expertise in facilitation and knowledge of strategic planning models.
  • Expertise in web and interactive/new media promotional marketing.
  • Understanding of customer service principles and generational service needs.
  • Broad knowledge of research design, data collection and research analysis related to higher education and marketing.
  • Active membership in an LCMS church or another Christian church that is shaped and informed by the inerrant, inspired, infallible Word of God; and faithfully teaches salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
  • Values and beliefs aligned with the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod.
  • Demonstrated character qualities of enthusiasm, courtesy, flexibility, integrity, gratitude, kindness, self-control, perseverance, and punctuality.
  • Must follow security policies and maintain security and patching of personal devices connected to the Institutional email.

Nice to Have

  • Higher Education experience.
  • Experience with and/or commitment to marketing and communication for a distinctly Christian organization.
