The role of Senior Director of Content Analytics involves leading a team of data analysts and scientists to analyze audience and engagement trends, guiding product and editorial decisions across multiple platforms, and fostering a culture of data-driven insights.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop comprehensive methodologies to assess performance of individual pieces of content compared to expectations.
  • Understand, measure, and explain the news cycle, providing assessments of content and overall digital performance relative to the news cycle of the day.
  • Support the growth and deepening of audience engagement for content delivered via streaming products and produce insights with tangible opportunities for editorial teams to act on.
  • Inform long-term content strategy through deep analytics and modeling synthesized with research.
  • Drive the development of self-serve tools for the newsroom to quickly understand performance and inform real-time decisions for coverage and content promotion.
  • Co-lead the conversation on digital performance in daily news meetings with editorial partners.
  • Partner with audience and engagement analytic teams to evaluate how content drives overall reach and engagement.
  • Develop and lead a team of data analysts partnering with product and editorial teams.
  • Execute on the analytic strategy of content groups within CNN, delivering data analysis, experimentation, and survey-based research.
  • Evaluate existing and develop new metrics, reports, and dashboards for internal audiences, ensuring data definitions are consistent and documented.
  • Apply quantitative disciplines and creativity to translate data into actionable insights through data visualization.
  • Define and validate data by working with business partners to ensure data quality and alignment with company-wide data standards.
  • Work with internal or external data partners to process, organize, and connect various data sources, including content metadata, behavioral user data, and third-party audience data.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in data/analytics or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience managing and building an analytics team.
  • Experience with BI tools such as Looker, Domo, Tableau, etc.
  • Significant experience using SQL to explore and analyze large data sets in cloud environments.
  • Experience working with structured and unstructured data sets to provide data requirements.
  • Experience with digital news, streaming content, or relevant digital analytics, with a strong interest in news.
  • Ability to attract, retain, and develop data talent through caring leadership and an inclusive mindset.
  • Collaborative approach to partnership and communication with diverse backgrounds and seniority levels.
  • Logical mindset capable of balancing speed and analytical depth without sacrificing quality.
  • Self-starter with passion for data, analytics, and helping others make data-driven decisions.

Nice to Have

  • BA/BS degree or higher in Math/Stats, Operations Research, Computer Science, Engineering, or related quantitative field.
  • Industry knowledge of digital streaming services and analytical approaches.
  • Experience working with editorial teams.
  • Strong background in experimentation and statistics.
  • Experience with writing Python and R scripts.
