About the Role

Berkley Specialty Excess (BSE), founded in 2023 as a member company of W.R. Berkley Corporation, is an excess and surplus lines commercial insurance carrier. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead enterprise-wide data initiatives and oversee the development and execution of data analytics strategies that drive business performance and support executive decision-making.
  • Manage enterprise data assets, lead reinsurance data integration efforts, and ensure alignment with corporate data governance standards.
  • Work closely with the CFO and a team of analysts and data professionals, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Design, develop, and deliver business intelligence, financial, and operational analytics to support strategic decision-making.
  • Partner with senior leadership to identify key performance indicators (KPIs) and develop dashboards and reports that track business performance.
  • Drive the development and refinement of predictive models and advanced analytics to support underwriting, claims, and profitability analysis.
  • Oversee the collection, validation, and analysis of reinsurance data to support treaty renewals, reporting, and compliance.
  • Collaborate with Reinsurance and Finance teams to ensure accurate and timely data for reinsurance submissions and audits.
  • Lead the development of reinsurance-specific dashboards and analytics to monitor treaty performance and risk exposure.
  • Serve as a key liaison with the Corporate Data Governance Committee to ensure compliance with data standards, policies, and best practices.
  • Maintain and update data governance documentation and control reports.
  • Support the development of business cases and financial models for strategic initiatives and system implementations.
  • Work with and mentor a team of analysts, fostering professional growth and ensuring high-quality deliverables.
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Oversee workload allocation and ensure optimal utilization of team resources.
  • Collaborate with IT and Data Architecture teams on Berkley Data Warehouse strategy, system enhancements, and new application development.
  • Drive the adoption of modern analytics tools and platforms (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Python, R).
  • Participate in system conversions and data mart enhancements to streamline reporting and analytics.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in business analytics, financial reporting, or data science.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Deep understanding of data governance, data quality, and compliance frameworks.
  • Proficiency in SQL (SSMS), SSRS, Tableau, Power BI, and Excel; experience with Python or R is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Mathematics, Computer Science, Actuarial Science, or a related field.
  • Experience in the commercial insurance industry, including exposure to reinsurance data and treaty structures.

Nice to Have

  • Experience working with E&S (Excess & Surplus) data and systems.
  • Familiarity with regulatory data calls and compliance reporting.
  • Demonstrated success in leading cross-functional data initiatives and driving business transformation through analytics.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Finance, Mathematics, Computer Science, or Actuarial Science.
  • Experience in the commercial insurance industry, including exposure to reinsurance data and treaty structures.

  • Competitive compensation plan with a base salary range of $180,000 - $220,000.
