Job Description

About the Role

We are looking for a seasoned outside sales professional with experience in lumber and wood-based products, ideally with exposure to industrial packaging, architectural millwork, custom milling, and/or construction-grade materials. This role requires a candidate who can prospect, grow, and manage accounts across diverse sectors—offering Highland Lumber's full range of services with integrity and strategic insight. Highland Lumber is a full-service industrial lumber yard with almost 30 years in business, pride in fulfilling any wood component need, and a strong emphasis on employee care and a bilingual work environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Represent Highland Lumber's entire product and service portfolio including: Industrial softwood packaging and crating lumber, Architectural and finish-grade hardwoods, Custom milling and fabrication solutions, Construction framing and sheet goods
  • Identify and qualify new sales opportunities across multiple industries
  • Build and maintain strong customer relationships by providing expert consultation and timely follow-up
  • Work closely with inside sales, operations, and millwork teams to deliver complete, on-time solutions
  • Develop strategic account plans and deliver on quarterly growth targets
  • Stay current on market trends, lumber pricing, and customer needs to adapt strategies accordingly
  • Maintain accurate records in CRM and provide regular forecasting and sales updates

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of outside sales experience in the lumber, wood products, or building materials industry
  • A diverse book of business across at least one (preferably more) of the following sectors: packaging/crating, construction, architecture/design, or custom fabrication
  • Strong understanding of lumber species, grading, milling, and supply chain dynamics
  • Bachelor's degree preferred, or equivalent industry and sales experience
  • Self-starter with exceptional negotiation and relationship-building skills
  • Comfortable working autonomously and traveling within the Southern California region
  • Proficiency in CRM systems and quoting tools

Nice to Have

  • Experience with industrial packaging and crating lumber
  • Experience in architectural millwork or custom fabrication
  • Knowledge of construction-grade materials

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of outside sales experience in relevant industry
  • Experience with multiple sectors such as packaging/crating, construction, architecture/design, or custom fabrication
  • Knowledge of lumber species, grading, milling, and supply chain dynamics
  • Proficiency in CRM systems and quoting tools
