About the Role

The Chief Development Officer (CDO) leads the development and implementation of a multifaceted program encompassing grant making, fundraising, marketing, communications, and community engagement. The CDO is responsible for identifying and pursuing diverse funding streams to generate support for Whitney Young Health (WYH) and Equinox, leading a team of professionals in donor relations, communications, public relations, marketing, events, and volunteer management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the Development & Marketing Plan and ensure its success
  • Meet/exceed monthly and quarterly goals for meaningful contacts with donors and prospective donors, as well as annual financial goals; produce department KPIs and other financial reports for CEO and the Nominating and Development Committee; analyze effectiveness of initiatives and realign strategies to accommodate a changing environment and giving trends
  • Work in concert with the CEO, Board of Directors and the Nominating and Development Committee to generate diverse streams of revenue that align with the organizational strategic initiatives and to identify growth opportunities; engage Nominating and Development Committee members in the execution of their roles and responsibilities
  • Develop and implement strategies that attract and retain individual, foundation and corporate support for WYH and Equinox, including direct mail and online appeals, grants and events
  • Manage and enhance existing relationships with WYH and Equinox supporters and partners through stewardship while expanding the portfolio of individual, corporate and foundation donors through research, cultivation and solicitation activities
  • Provide leadership for the organization to communicate the needs and mission of WYH and Equinox in a passionate and compelling manner to the community, members of the Board, private funders and other key stakeholders
  • Develop strategies to actively engage Board members in a deliberate, development process; generate and follow leads from Board members and make regular reports on progress against planned goals
  • Oversee, audit and comply with gift processing practices and policies including copying checks and processing credit cards/online donations, gift database entry, tracking/reporting, deposits, donor acknowledgement, and month-end reconciliation with the Finance Department
  • Act as main liaison with media outlets and coordinate all media relations through the Director of Communications
  • Oversee agency's website, social media, e-marketing initiatives, and general communications
  • Oversee and participate in community outreach efforts with community partners, including attending events, making presentations, and serving on committees
  • Provide primary oversight and management of the development and marketing staff
  • Demonstrate excellence in both internal and external customer service
  • Understand and effectively communicate HIPAA compliance, corporate compliance, and client confidentiality
  • Ensure and/or remain in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations such as DHHS HRSA and NYSDOH, and accreditation standards (e.g., Joint Commission and NCQA-PCMH)
  • Adhere to the National Patient Safety Goals as defined by the Joint Commission and Whitney M. Young Jr. Health Center
  • Complete other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Communication, Journalism, Business or related healthcare/business field
  • Seven (7) years of fundraising and marketing experience with demonstrated success in creating and executing development strategies
  • Five (5) years serving in a supervisory capacity
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft applications and donor software products
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience in event planning and execution
  • Ability to work beyond normal business hours if needed
  • Good organizational skills and an ability to handle multiple assignments
  • Ability to work with senior level management and to self-direct one's work

Benefits & Perks

  • Salary range: $115,000 - $130,000 annually
