Communications and Research Manager - Penn Center for Media, Technology, and Democracy

About the Role

Key Responsibilities

• Write a newsletter, maintain an aggregation webpage using WordPress, and create social media content to disseminate research, policy analysis, and current events related to the information ecosystem and its societal impact.
• Develop research briefs, background primers, and event summaries that distill academic research into accessible insights with key takeaways and recommendations.
• Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop a communications strategy targeting audiences across academia, civil society, industry, policymakers, influencers, and the public.
• Assist in writing an annual report on the Center's accomplishments for funders and stakeholders.
• Develop press pitches and engage with media and journalists to promote coverage of the Center's research, events, and impact.
• Support routine communications with stakeholders including university leadership, faculty, civil society organizations, foundations, and industry leaders.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and at least three years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Demonstrated commitment to promoting democracy and interest in technology and media studies.
• Ability to analyze and clearly communicate complex research ideas to diverse audiences.
• Excellent writing skills with experience in research and policy briefs, newsletters, social media content, or related communications.
• Proficiency in WordPress or other website content management systems, or willingness to learn.
• Routine in-person attendance (3-5 days per week).

• Experience with other communications IT software.

Qualifications

• Educational background with a bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
• Minimum of three years of relevant experience or equivalent education and experience.
