About the Role

The Director of Marketing & Publicity at Saga Press, an imprint of Simon & Schuster specializing in Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, Romantasy, and other popular genres, will oversee the imprint's marketing and publicity programs. The role involves managing a team of four, working closely with the Publisher, Editorial Director, and Art Director throughout the entire book lifecycle, and creating innovative campaigns to engage readers and grow authors' careers. The position offers an opportunity to define the future of marketing and publicity in a dynamic, fast-growing division within a leading publishing company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conceiving and executing multitouch campaigns with an emphasis on digital and social strategy
  • Management and allocation for annual 6-figure marketing, publicity, promotional budget
  • Engaging with the traditional media landscape but a deep understanding of where readers find their books now
  • Developing and curating a new approach to Marketing & Publicity, in collaboration with the Publishing Office
  • Interface regularly with authors, agents, editors, booksellers, librarians, and other key players in the book world
  • Devising and presenting campaigns and initiatives to internal and external stakeholders
  • Managing all aspects of social media and content, including Instagram, TikTok, X, Blue Sky, YouTube, Reddit, Royal Road, etc.
  • Supervising creative for ads, sales collateral, and other promotional items
  • Managing paid digital/social campaigns and synthesizing data analytics
  • Coordinating email efforts with the digital marketing group
  • Developing and producing content marketing collateral, including video and editorial, and strategizing placement and amplification
  • Cultivating strategic promotional partnerships and creator/influencer relationships
  • Working with multiple divisions, creative services, sales divisions, etc.
  • Initiating and leading strategy and planning meetings
  • Applying creativity, ambition, and analytical skills to develop effective campaigns and understand fandoms

Requirements

  • 7-10 years of marketing experience in book publishing or related industry
  • A deep understanding of genre publishing
  • Proven success in consumer-facing campaign planning, digital marketing, social media strategy, and talent management
  • Strong connections in traditional and new media
  • Understanding of the planning stages of a publishing campaign, from preorder to on-sale to lifecycle
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills (written and verbal)
  • Confidence in presenting to internal and external stakeholders, including prospective authors, celebrities, and thought leaders
  • Proficient with all major social media platforms and their respective business tools
  • Organized, detail-oriented, collaborative, and versatile in handling multiple projects
  • Management and mentor experience

Nice to Have

  • Strong understanding of pitching the traditional and new media landscapes
  • High confidence level with launching organic and paid multimedia campaigns, tracking and synthesizing data
  • Experience managing a six-figure marketing budget
  • Familiarity with book production timelines from acquisition to shelf life
  • Content creation/marketing acumen, including video and editorial content
