About the Role

The Multimedia Content & Communications Strategist, Senior Manager at United Way of the National Capital Area plays a pivotal role in bringing the organization's work to life through dynamic storytelling and strong copywriting. The role involves engaging donors, volunteers, community partners, and the wider community by creating compelling human stories across various media channels. The position requires a strategic and creative writer with experience in multimedia storytelling, content development, and digital engagement, working closely with internal teams and external stakeholders to support organizational goals and regional impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement narrative strategies by crafting compelling stories that engage audiences, reinforce organizational values, and guide strategic direction.
  • Lead the development and management of a cross-functional editorial calendar to ensure alignment and narrative consistency.
  • Provide vision and expertise in multimedia storytelling to develop communication assets including podcasts, newsletters, videos, and photography.
  • Field-produce and direct interviews, documentaries, and other multimedia content from concept through execution.
  • Capture high-quality photos and videos using DSLR or mirrorless cameras, documenting events, interviews, or site visits.
  • Edit videos using Adobe Creative Suite (e.g., Premiere Pro).
  • Develop and execute a content strategy that enhances visibility, reputation, and brand storytelling.
  • Write, edit, and curate high-impact content such as donor stories, web articles, newsletters, reports, social media content, and marketing materials.
  • Collaborate with the Digital Marketing Manager to optimize and produce stories for the website and digital platforms.
  • Monitor content performance using analytics tools and report insights to refine strategies.
  • Leverage stakeholder insights to personalize content and work cross-functionally with PR, media, and communications teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • High School Diploma or GED with related multimedia and communications experience.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of professional video and editorial experience.
  • At least five (5) years of experience in content strategy, writing, or editorial development, preferably within nonprofit or related environments.
  • Experience developing and executing multi-channel content strategies that drive engagement.
  • Strong storytelling, content marketing, and digital platform experience for at least three (3) years.
  • Proficiency in filming and producing digital and print content for diverse audiences.
  • Knowledge of editing programs like Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere Pro).
  • Excellent written and visual communication skills.
  • Ability to translate technical material into accessible, compelling stories.
  • Project management skills and attention to detail.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with social media content creation and digital marketing performance monitoring.
  • Knowledge of storytelling grant opportunities and supporting partnerships or proposals.
  • Experience in community engagement and reputation management.
  • Familiarity with photography gear and video shooting techniques.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant fields or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five (5) years of multimedia and editorial experience.
  • Proven experience in content strategy and digital storytelling.
