About the Role

The Project Leader (PL) for the Special Projects Team at MITRE is responsible for managing a large, technically diverse, and mission-focused project within the Advanced Capabilities Department. The role involves developing and enabling capabilities to counter peer adversaries, support the US in operating within highly contested environments, and foster partnerships across the Air Force, other services, and the Intelligence Community. Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all aspects of the project, including managing a large, complex work program with multiple stakeholders and objectives.
  • Drive and contribute to major design, investment, and requirements decisions for next-generation weapons systems and warfighter capabilities.
  • Lead, develop, and execute test and evaluation activities supporting program milestones.
  • Conduct analyses of COTS, GOTS, and custom capabilities to inform project decisions.
  • Provide objective technical guidance to shape and define program objectives and requirements.
  • Build and lead multi-disciplinary project teams while managing the competing interests of multiple government program managers.
  • Shape and define project tasks and workstreams to maximize impact.
  • Establish and document work objectives with long-term and maturity planning.
  • Create cross-project collaborations with shared outcomes and multi-stakeholder buy-in.
  • Demonstrate and promote MITRE's cultural attributes such as speed, risk-taking, adaptability, collaboration, grace, and respect.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship across teams.
  • Offer regular feedback to staff and contribute to staff development.
  • Collaborate with sponsors to develop documentation for work definition and defense dollar ceiling requests.
  • Manage stakeholder equities and maintain staffing plans.
  • Complete monthly highlights and annual project reports.
  • Ensure technical quality norms and processes are followed across the team.
  • Coordinate across MNS, MPS, and MITRE Labs to ensure appropriate staffing for technical tasks.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a minimum of 12 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 10 years with a Master's degree; or 7 years with a PhD; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior experience working in Special Access Programs (SAPs).
  • Active TS/SCI clearance with the ability to be cleared for SAPs.
  • Proven track record in making technical contributions and shaping work to meet sponsor needs.
  • Experience with all aspects of project management, including work shaping, staff planning, recruiting, budgeting, and reporting.
  • Strong knowledge of the DoD and DAF sponsor space and missions, with experience working at senior levels across multiple organizations.
  • Excellent sponsor engagement, communication skills, and experience in sensitive, high-risk environments.
  • Strong writing, editing, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate complex topics clearly.

Nice to Have

  • Strong technical background in areas such as advanced sensor technologies, modeling and simulation, complex systems engineering, digital engineering, electronic warfare, offensive cyber, or software engineering.
  • MS or equivalent degree and 15 or more years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of MITRE's organizational structure, work programs, and value proposition.
  • TS/SCI and SAP clearances.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field.
  • Minimum of 12 years of related experience or equivalent education and experience.
  • Active TS/SCI clearance with SAP eligibility.
