Job Description

About the Role

NRDC is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. We use law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our people helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act and many of the implementing regulations. Today, our team of more than 700 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy advocates, communications experts, and others work across the United States and the globe from our offices in Beijing; Chicago; New Delhi; New York; San Francisco; Santa Monica; and Washington, D.C. The organization is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and offers a supportive working environment with competitive salaries and benefits. NRDC operates under a hybrid work model, requiring employees to come to the office 8 days per month, and emphasizes health safety measures including vaccination requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and draft assets for digital advocacy campaigns focused on supporting NRDC's local, state and regional environmental policy advocacy goals.
  • Write and edit email and action alerts, landing page copy, and some supporting copy for multi-channel assets (e.g. social or digital ad copy).
  • Coordinate the intake and scheduling of regional advocacy issues with other key Communications Department staff, other NRDC teams, and outside consultants.
  • Execute editorial review and approval processes and work with digital production staff to proof and launch emails, SMS messages, and forms.
  • Collaborate with the team to ensure action alerts conform to digital advocacy and engagement best practices.
  • Monitor and report on the results of campaigns and use data and analytics to make strategic and tactical campaign decisions.
  • Develop and distribute data-driven performance reports on regional digital advocacy efforts to key stakeholders inside NRDC.
  • Curate promotion of regional advocacy efforts on key Communications channels like the website and social media channels.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2-4 years' experience in digital and/or on-the-ground advocacy, ideally with some experience working on progressive national advocacy causes and/or political or electoral campaigns.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, experience writing short and punchy direct-response advocacy emails, and the ability to adapt writing style to a pre-existing 'voice.'
  • Demonstrated ability to produce copy that is clear, compelling, and motivating, with the capacity to turn around copy on a same-day basis for rapid response.
  • Knowledge of digital engagement best practices and interest in staying up to date on new digital advocacy tools, tactics, and strategies.
  • Ability to work quickly in a 'rapid response' environment to draft copy in response to breaking news events.
  • A deep concern for the natural world, a belief in the power of grassroots action to make a difference, and a commitment to using a large membership and online citizen network to help protect the environment.

Nice to Have

  • Experience working with progressive advocacy organizations, electoral campaigns, and/or consulting firms to utilize digital tools to mobilize people to take action online.
  • Experience with on-the-ground grassroots or field organizing.

Qualifications

  • Educational background is not explicitly specified, but relevant professional experience is required.

Benefits & Perks

  • Competitive salaries and excellent benefits.
  • Supportive working environment.
  • Salary range from $82,000 to $90,000.
  • Hybrid work model requiring 8 days per month in the office.
  • Health safety measures including vaccination requirements or accommodations.
