About the Role

The Social Media Spec supports the Virginia Department of Transportation's statewide social media manager by assisting with content creation, planning, customer response, engagement, graphic design, video production, advertising, social listening, analytics, and strategy for VDOT's organic and paid social media content across multiple platforms. The role involves developing social messaging during emergencies, coordinating with creative teams, and managing social media campaigns to enhance VDOT's communication efforts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor social performance metrics to measure sentiment, campaign performance, optimize social strategy, and identify growth opportunities.
  • Develop timely, on-brand, and engaging content for all VDOT statewide social channels, including X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Nextdoor, and Reddit; use a social media management platform to schedule social content.
  • Engage with audiences by responding to comments and questions on social media platforms.
  • Develop and publish social media messaging during emergency response as assigned.
  • Work with the Statewide Social Media Manager and leadership to develop social messaging on emergency, crisis, and current issues.
  • Assist with creation of accessible graphics and videos to support social media messaging and campaigns using Adobe Creative Cloud apps and Canva.
  • Coordinate with VDOT's Creative Services team, including graphics, photo, and video professionals.
  • Assist with content creation, management, and moderation of social media advertising campaigns.

Requirements

  • Ability to manage multimedia projects and organize complex information into clear, concise content.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and respond to work activity outside of standard hours, including holidays and weekends.
  • Knowledge of social media strategy, analytics, and advertising.
  • Skill in developing organic and paid social media content across multiple channels and audiences.
  • Skill in editing and familiarity with AP style guidelines.
  • Proficiency with computers and software applications including MS Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Canva.
  • Ability to create and manage social media advertisements and video content.
  • Knowledge of social media accessibility and archiving tools.
  • Ability to participate in 24/7 emergency communications and respond to unexpected issues.

Nice to Have

  • Experience creating short-form video content.
  • Experience with crisis communications.
  • Experience working with Meta Ads Manager and Business Suite software.
  • Experience using social media management tools such as Sprout Social, HootSuite, Sprinklr, Bandwatch, or ArchiveSocial.
  • Proficiency on Mac and PC.
  • Proven success in social media and communications project management.
  • Training, experience, or education in Communications, Public Relations, or related field.
