Job Description

About the Role

The Structural Designer is responsible for creating and improving packaging designs, coordinating with tooling suppliers, and supporting production and customer needs. The role involves working closely with sales, operations, and external customers to ensure innovative and efficient packaging solutions, utilizing CAD and graphic design tools, and maintaining quality standards within the corrugated industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Follow all safety rules and procedures
  • Contribute to teamwork efforts to meet all goals
  • Produce samples and small production runs of prototypes on the CAD table for testing purposes
  • Write and transmit specifications as requested
  • Improve existing packaging with innovative solutions, including customer site visits and packaging audits
  • Coordinate with tooling suppliers
  • Review information and order cutting dies, printing plates, labels, and preprint on new items
  • Travel with Sales Reps to customer locations when required
  • Develop strong internal working relationships to support and promote efficient and accurate responses to customers, sales, and operations departments
  • Assist with routine lab functions
  • Handle daily graphics projects as dictated by customers and plant
  • Develop advanced graphic design skills and on-the-job training
  • Assist sales reps in the absence of the design manager
  • Perform tooling verification of new products, including print plates, cutting dies, labels, and preprint
  • Handle all requirements of preprint and labels, including obtaining quotes, checking artwork, and verifying labels upon arrival
  • Obtain quotes on tooling such as cutting dies and print plates
  • Place orders for printing plates, cutting dies, labels, and preprint materials to supply production
  • Assist with production special requests or problem tooling
  • Perform activities to help maintain the functions of the design department
  • Create graphic mock-up samples as requested by customers

Requirements

  • Ability to meet the requirements of the job with or without accommodation
  • Strong verbal, written, and electronic communication skills
  • Ability to work closely with internal and external customers
  • In-depth working knowledge of Microsoft Office, CAD, Artios CAD, Cape Pack, Graphics Adobe Creative Suite, TOPPS, and CAD table
  • Knowledge of box plant machinery, tooling, and processes including scoring, machine capabilities/limitations, and drawings
  • Knowledge of various paperboard stocks, board grade combinations, corrugation, and printing processes
  • Experience operating sample cutting tables
  • Good knowledge of the corrugated industry; working POP knowledge is desired
  • Strong cognitive and math skills
  • Ability to think in 3D
  • Detail-oriented
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
