About the Role

The USGS Water Mission Area (WMA) Web Communications Branch (WCB) deploys high-end information technology products to enhance data storage and access methods against natural resource datasets in support of the USGS mission. Akima Systems Engineering is seeking a Subject Matter Expert (SME) II to participate in an agile scrum team, focusing on front-end programming tasks using languages such as NodeJS, Python, and JavaScript, with emphasis on user interface development using frameworks including Vue, React, and Angular. The role involves maintaining and modifying existing programs, participating in UX design, code reviews, sprint planning, testing, documentation, and collaborating with scientists and researchers to develop applications that support natural resource data analysis and visualization.

Key Responsibilities

Programming in support of WMA's product portfolio.
Assists in the development of custom applications and software systems in NodeJS, Python, Java, and other languages in a web-based environment.
Performs system analysis and design for new and existing applications.
Assists with translation of systems requirements into application prototypes.
Assists with planning and designing system and application architecture.
Assists in developing user interfaces from given design parameters.
Participates in agile software development lifecycle in a team environment.
Assists other developers with larger tasks and leads development for certain use cases.
Performs code reviews, presents code for review, and incorporates feedback.
Provides feedback and validation on code developed by other team members.
Learns and incorporates best practices in software design.
Defines and configures unit and integration testing platforms.
Writes, debugs, and maintains code.
Works with customers to test applications and performs Quality Assurance testing.
Writes and maintains program documentation.
Collaborates with other developers to ensure security policies are followed.
Works with scientists and researchers to develop applications for data storage, access, and analysis.
Uses domain knowledge of natural science principles to design data access and analysis systems.
Participates in providing guidance on functionality complexity and developing tools including geospatial displays and decision support systems.

Requirements

BA in Computer Science or similar discipline.
2-3 years of experience in web-based applications.
Experience in NodeJS, Python, and JavaScript.
Experience in user interface development using JavaScript frameworks including Vue, React, and Angular.
Experience with system analysis, design, and software lifecycle processes.
Ability to work in an agile team environment.
Knowledge of or interest in natural resource data and scientific principles is a plus.

Nice to Have

Experience with Federal work is a plus.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
2-3 years of relevant experience.
