About the Role

The Assistant Director of Communications and Social Media will serve as a member of the athletic communications team at the University of Minnesota, working to advance the reputation and positioning of the Department of Athletics. The role involves managing communication and social media responsibilities for women's hockey, men's basketball, and overall Gopher Sports accounts, developing strategies, creating content, and analyzing social performance metrics. The position reports to the Sr. Associate AD for Communications and collaborates with various units within the department to enhance visibility, engagement, and revenue through social media campaigns.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, coordinate, and implement public relations and communications strategies for women's hockey, including managing press conferences, post-practice and post-game availabilities, social media channels, and community engagement.
  • Write and edit news releases, game notes, feature stories, and social media content for women's hockey, and maintain all related content for Gopher Sports.
  • Coordinate publicity efforts for women's hockey student-athletes, coaches, and staff, and manage records, statistics, and personnel files.
  • Coordinate local and national television and radio coverage for women's hockey when needed, including travel to road and postseason competitions.
  • Develop and oversee game-day media management responsibilities for women's hockey, including managing staff, interns, and statistical crews.
  • Produce accurate statistical reports and manage media credential requests in compliance with conference and NCAA guidelines.
  • Develop social media strategies supporting Gopher Athletics and men's basketball, including monitoring industry practices and emerging platforms.
  • Lead and participate in social media efforts for men's basketball, including posting, responding, and promoting initiatives in real-time.
  • Oversee content creation and management for men's basketball and Gopher Sports social accounts, including photos/videos, and assist in hiring, training, and managing student staff.
  • Assist the Communications team and department staff as needed, including supporting social media for gamedays and other events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Art or related field.
  • Four years of professional social media/communications experience.
  • Experience in collegiate or professional sports social media, communications, marketing, digital media relations, or public relations.

  • Full-time experience in collegiate or professional sports social media, communications, marketing, digital, media relations, athletic communications or public relations.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of four years of professional social media/communications experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
