About the Role

The Director, Digital Fundraising at the National Geographic Society leads the digital fundraising program within the Advancement team, focusing on developing strategy, managing staff, and driving revenue growth across digital channels such as email, web, digital ads, and other digital platforms. The role involves collaborating with internal teams and external vendors to optimize digital campaigns, oversee budgets and KPIs, and ensure alignment with organizational goals. The position emphasizes innovation, data-driven decision-making, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise three digital fundraising staff (two Senior Managers and a Specialist) and support their growth and professional development.
  • Create annual and long-term program strategy in collaboration with the VP, incorporating feedback from colleagues.
  • Help colleagues and direct reports understand strategy, map and achieve goals, and expand the digital fundraising program.
  • Research and build expertise of current and emerging fundraising technologies and make recommendations for program innovations.
  • Oversee digital fundraising projects with internal enterprise-wide partners and external vendors.
  • Serve as the AGM lead on enterprise-wide technology and integration projects to ensure donor and member cultivation opportunities are prioritized.
  • Lead development of strategy for integrated digital campaigns and oversee content and creative elements.
  • Manage the digital calendar and strategies for member communication and digital acquisition efforts.
  • Oversee relationships with digital advertising agencies and collaborate with the Communications and Marketing team to align digital tactics with Society priorities.
  • Manage all aspects of the digital fundraising program budget, including investment, ROI, partnerships, and revenue targets.
  • Develop and manage testing roadmap to optimize digital fundraising efforts and interpret program KPIs and data to inform strategies.
  • Analyze campaign effectiveness, establish benchmarks, and compare performance to industry standards.
  • Partner with teams and vendors to enhance user experience through effective utilization of digital platforms.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of digital fundraising experience with expertise in strategy creation and budget management.
  • Fluent knowledge of current and emerging trends in digital fundraising and constituent/member engagement.
  • Robust experience with Engaging Networks.
  • 5+ years managing staff and leading a digital fundraising team.
  • Demonstrated effective leadership skills.
  • Proven ability to develop donor/member strategies and create effective digital and omnichannel campaigns.
  • Excellent strategic thinking skills with the ability to leverage data to increase results.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong relationship management and interpersonal skills.
  • Good judgment and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional integrity.
  • Competency in MS Office or Google Workspace.

  • Familiarity with Raiser’s Edge and other fundraising and email platforms.
  • Ability to relate to people of diverse backgrounds, training, and experience.
  • Possession of a growth mindset and high emotional intelligence.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
