About the Role

The Executive Director of Social Media at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is a strategic leadership role responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and optimization of digital content across social media platforms for the university and the Chancellor. The position involves leading a team, managing reputation, fostering campus collaborations, and developing social media strategies aligned with the university's mission and goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establishes, implements and manages a social media strategy for the university's primary social channels that aligns with the university's mission, goals and strategic plan, elevates its visibility and reputation, attracts and retains diverse student populations.
  • Develops quantifiable goals for social media channels and conducts ongoing evaluation and analysis to drive optimal outcomes.
  • Develops, implements and manages a comprehensive social media strategy for the Chancellor, engaging audiences authentically and analyzing performance to drive growth and engagement.
  • Directs social media listening, monitoring and engagement, playing a lead role in reputation and issues management.
  • Leads campus-wide collaborations by being regularly present on campus to identify and share social content, strengthen relationships with faculty and staff, and promote unified campus messages.
  • Provides hands-on support to faculty and staff on social media opportunities and challenges.
  • Establishes and provides guidance on social media policy and best practices for internal and external audiences.
  • Collaborates with the University Relations MarCom team to develop strategy, identify projects, and plan content.
  • Leads, coaches, and mentors a team of social media specialists to foster an innovative work culture.
  • Coordinates with the news content team to enhance storytelling on social channels and university web pages.
  • Develops a mobile-first video content strategy leveraging multimedia production resources.
  • Coordinates with stakeholders to establish a social media content calendar and manages project workflows.
  • Serves as the first point of contact for social media communications and works onsite during critical situations to ensure timely emergency notifications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Communication or a related field.
  • 7 years of related experience in communications, journalism, public relations or a related field, including social media content creation.
  • Experience with social media management software (e.g., Sprout).
  • Knowledge of strategies and tactics employed by critics and advocates on social media.
  • Experience in social media-related reputation management.
  • Skills in writing, video, photography, and multimedia news editing.
  • Experience working with content management systems.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and discretion.
  • Exceptional communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work quickly under pressure and manage time effectively.
  • Strong collaborative work ethic with a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Understanding of cohesive brand storytelling on social channels.
  • Ability to work outside normal business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field.
  • Seven years of related professional experience.

Benefits & Perks

  • Work schedule Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with some nights and weekends as needed.
  • Salary Level 31, exempt position.
