Job Description

About the Role

The NEA Internship Program offers interns the opportunity to gain training, learning experiences, and exposure to various programmatic activities supporting quality public education. Interns will work at NEA Headquarters in Washington, DC, supporting the Center for Organizing and Affiliate Support through communication, content development, and social media strategies. The program is designed for students and recent graduates interested in public education policy and issues, providing meaningful projects and opportunities to collaborate with NEA staff and participate in organizational events.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support affiliate programs by writing articles, editing copy, proofreading, and submitting for publication approval.
  • Assist in developing, revising, and producing electronic promotional materials to support membership and organizing programs.
  • Develop and produce content for newsletters, brochures, conference programs, event flyers, and other communication pieces.
  • Create content for website and social media accounts, assess current social media strategies, and propose improvements.
  • Develop and implement a 12-month social media plan to promote affiliate programs, services, and legislative accomplishments.
  • Collect, draft, and edit members' testimonials, including photographs, in support of affiliate programs and legislative efforts.
  • Participate in NEA activities such as interviews with leadership, observing events like the Representative Assembly, and engaging in policy forums or lobbying activities.

Requirements

  • Interest in public education policy and issues.
  • Strong communication, writing, and editing skills.
  • Experience or familiarity with social media platforms.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks.
  • Skill in using a computer and/or laptop, proofreading, and editing.
  • Interpersonal relations skills, reasoning, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to sit for long periods, stoop, bend, reach, and carry light materials (up to 10 lbs).
  • Willingness to travel by various transportation methods.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with content development for newsletters, brochures, or conference materials.
  • Knowledge of membership organizing and advocacy strategies.
  • Familiarity with social media content strategies and engagement techniques.

Qualifications

  • Students pursuing degrees in Education, Political Science, Government, Human Resources, Public Policy, Social Sciences, Business, Finance, Economics, Management, Communications, Computer Science, Journalism, Mass Media, Graphic Design, Digital Communications, or related disciplines.
  • Recent college graduates (up to 18 months) or graduate students.
