About the Role

At IBM Quantum Software, we are looking for an experienced performance test engineer. The role involves defining and designing performance test methods and tools, understanding the IBM Quantum software stack, and working closely with the reliability team to ensure the health, reliability, and availability of complex distributed software. The engineer will collaborate with software testers, support teams, and a multidisciplinary global team to advance the performance of IBM quantum control systems and contribute to the development of the software stack for next-generation quantum computers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Distill test analysis input into a technical performance test strategy.
  • Define and design performance test methods and tools, selecting or creating appropriate tools and frameworks.
  • Gain a clear understanding of the IBM Quantum software stack.
  • Work closely with the reliability team to contribute to the overall health, reliability, and availability of the software.
  • Enable software testers to conduct tests, analyze results, and report observations.
  • Interact with support teams to understand common failure patterns and issues, and define strategies to address them.
  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary, global team of developers and researchers to bring new capabilities to life.
  • Help develop the software stack for the next generation of quantum computers.

Requirements

  • Solid experience as a performance engineer in distributed environments.
  • Deep familiarity with observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, etc.).
  • Strong knowledge of networking, I/O, concurrency, and operating systems internals.
  • Proficiency in profiling applications in multiple languages (e.g., Go, Rust, C/C++, Python).
  • Experience with cloud-native infrastructure (Kubernetes, containers, distributed services).
  • Basic educational qualification: Bachelor's Degree.
  • Preferred educational qualification: Master's Degree.

Nice to Have

  • Contributions to benchmarking and performance analysis tools.
  • Experience with heterogeneous environments (edge, bare metal + cloud).
  • Knowledge of advanced protocols (QUIC, gRPC, RDMA).
  • Awareness of energy efficiency and low-level system optimization.
  • Familiarity with quantum circuits, circuit optimizers, and quantum algorithms.
  • Experience with collaborative software development and agile methodologies (design documents, code reviews).
  • Experience with containerization technologies - Kubernetes/Red Hat OpenShift (preferred).

  • Educational background: Bachelor's Degree (required), Master's Degree (preferred).
