About the Role

The Senior Associate Director of Marketing at Long Island University leads the university's editorial strategy, manages flagship publications, and fosters external partnerships with corporate, cultural, and industry organizations. Reporting to the Chief of Brand Strategy, this role is vital in enhancing the university's reputation and visibility through storytelling, publications, and strategic alliances across regional, national, and global platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute integrated marketing strategies across digital, print, and media channels to advance enrollment, retention, fundraising, and brand awareness.
  • Ensure brand consistency in messaging, tone, and visual identity across all University platforms.
  • Collaborate with departments including Academic Affairs, Admissions, Advancement, Athletics, and Student Affairs to support recruitment, retention, fundraising, and branding goals.
  • Manage and mentor student workers, interns, part-time staff, and contracted vendors.
  • Coordinate multichannel campaigns (email, web, social media, print, video) aligned with institutional priorities.
  • Use analytics to measure campaign effectiveness and adjust strategies based on data insights.
  • Identify and implement emerging trends and best practices in higher education marketing.
  • Represent the University at internal and external events to ensure high-impact brand representation.
  • Serve as editor-in-chief for flagship magazine, newsletters, and reports; oversee editorial calendars and content strategies.
  • Produce and review compelling content highlighting student success, faculty scholarship, alumni impact, and donor support.
  • Collaborate with creative teams on publication design, layout, and production.
  • Establish and enforce editorial standards, including AP style and house style, and oversee editing, proofreading, and fact-checking.
  • Hire, train, and supervise freelance and part-time writers, copy editors, and student contributors.
  • Extend publications into digital experiences, including multimedia storytelling and social media campaigns.
  • Manage production schedules, budgets, and vendor relationships.
  • Monitor industry trends and peer practices to recommend innovative formats and storytelling methods.
  • Partner with the Web & Email Communications team to align digital distribution.
  • Collaborate with the Graphic Design team for layout and visual branding.
  • Coordinate with Multimedia team to incorporate video, photography, and social media features.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external partners such as Dassault Systèmes, Roc Nation, Virtual Enterprise International, The Society of Presidential Descendants, BSE Global, and Live Nation.
  • Work with university leadership to produce communications showcasing strategic alliances and philanthropic impacts.
  • Act as liaison to external organizations to ensure messaging alignment and maximize visibility.
  • Explore new publishing, media, and partnership opportunities to expand LIU's reach and reputation.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English, or a related field is required.
  • A master's degree is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in editorial management, publications, or communications, preferably in higher education or nonprofit sectors.
  • Demonstrated expertise managing publication lifecycles across print and digital platforms.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with mastery of AP style and institutional brand voice.
  • Proven ability to manage freelance writers, editors, and vendors.
  • Experience working with designers, photographers, and multimedia specialists.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to oversee complex schedules and budgets.
  • Excellent interpersonal and partnership-building skills with external organizations and corporate entities.
  • Familiarity with digital publishing platforms, CMS tools, and email marketing platforms.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in higher education or nonprofit sectors.
  • Knowledge of multimedia storytelling and digital content creation.
  • Experience with analytics tools to measure campaign effectiveness.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field (journalism, communications, English, or related).
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • At least 7 years of relevant experience in editorial management or communications.
