About the Role

The Senior Director of Marketing and Brand Engagement at American University is responsible for developing and executing all aspects of WAMU's marketing and public relations strategy. This role involves managing branding, promotions, events, strategic marketing partnerships, on-air promotions, email marketing, publications, social media, and visual identity to enhance WAMU's regional and national profile. The position reports to the Chief Advancement Officer and collaborates with various teams to increase audience engagement and fundraising initiatives, while overseeing communication strategies and budget planning within a hybrid work environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop key messaging using audience segmentation and execute targeted marketing campaigns to support station goals and events.
  • Oversee all marketing collateral and presentation development, including ad buys and marketing strategies for nationally syndicated programs.
  • Perform analysis on marketing and communications programs and benchmark station performance against industry standards.
  • Collaborate with Programming and Content stakeholders to identify opportunities for audience engagement and funding sources.
  • Develop effective communication strategies leveraging on-air, digital, social, print, and direct mail channels.
  • Oversee copywriting and editing for web, intranet, and newsletters, and manage the compilation of WAMU's Annual Report and other deliverables.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to external media organizations and develop internal communication strategies for staff updates.
  • Develop and oversee membership fundraising strategies, budgets, and execution of grassroots fundraising activities.
  • Supervise membership staff and donor database administration to ensure accurate records.
  • Work with external partners like American University's Office of Development and NPR to expand membership and fundraising potential.
  • Manage a team including marketing, communications, donor relations, membership, and events staff.
  • Manage a significant operating budget, assess membership analytics, and seek process efficiencies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in integrated fundraising, marketing, public/media relations, branding, or related fields.
  • At least five years of experience in internal and external communications, outreach, and engagement planning.
  • 3 or more years of supervisory or management experience.
  • Excellent oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, timelines, and budgets effectively.
  • Superior journalistic writing style for corporate and external publications.
  • Experience with media relations and strategic media planning in a multi-platform environment.
  • Ability to work a hybrid schedule and collaborate across organizational functions.

Nice to Have

  • Master's degree.
  • Experience working in a non-profit or media-based environment.
  • Experience managing a membership program.
  • CFRE (Certified Fundraising Executive) designation.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated excellence in fundraising, marketing, public relations, or branding.
  • Experience managing a membership program and developing outreach and engagement plans.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including journalistic style writing.
  • Ability to offer media relations advice and lead strategic media initiatives.
  • Experience working with diverse workforces and managing cross-functional teams.
