About the Role

The Social Media Coordinator develops compelling content and stories for Mercy Corps' global social channels, supporting organizational priorities and engaging diverse audiences through platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and X. The role involves content creation, storytelling, channel management, and community engagement to advance the organization's mission and visibility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research and develop compelling content ideas, working with the Director of Marketing Strategy to identify timely stories and trending topics that align with current events and organizational priorities.
  • Produce concepts for thumb-stopping social content, including researching and presenting relevant story options with rationales for social media use.
  • Write engaging, platform-specific copy for social posts, utilizing AI tools for brainstorming and applying editorial judgment for final content.
  • Produce and/or edit visual assets such as basic graphics and simple videos using tools like Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar platforms.
  • Monitor trending topics and news cycles to identify content opportunities that align with Mercy Corps' mission and programming.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to source authentic stories from program work and field operations.
  • Schedule and post content across owned channels using social media management platforms like Sprout Social or similar tools.
  • Support the Director of Marketing Strategy in developing and executing channel strategy.
  • Support social media requests to assist internal and external social needs, including advocacy initiatives, partnership obligations, and staff thought leadership.
  • Ensure social plans and assets are accessible in centralized locations for internal teams, partners, and regional social teams.
  • Monitor social media channels and respond to comments when appropriate, escalating sensitive content as needed.

Requirements

  • 1-3 years of professional experience in marketing, communications, PR, or a relevant field.
  • At least one year of experience managing social media and creating social content for a brand.
  • Strong copywriting and storytelling skills with experience crafting platform-specific content.
  • Familiarity with Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn platforms.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in deliverables.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Positive attitude and solution-oriented work approach.
  • Interest in social media trends, pop culture, current events, especially related to humanitarian issues.

Nice to Have
