About the Role

Reporting to the Assistant Dean, the Web Development Intern (Variable Hours Officer) will support the initial build of new webpages using Drupal. This supporting role involves helping design page layouts, develop user-friendly and accessible web pages to communicate essential information to students, faculty, and staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assists with the initial development and launch of CU site webpages using Drupal.
  • Helps design intuitive, accessible, and visually appealing webpages.
  • Aids in building and configuring page features such as calendars, news sections, and resource directories.
  • Ensures webpages align with Columbia University branding and accessibility standards.
  • Assists in documenting webpage architecture, workflows, and update procedures for future maintenance.
  • Provides training to staff on content updates and basic page management.
  • Supports the development of an analytics framework to assess user engagement and inform ongoing improvements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a program related to web development, computer science, information systems, digital media, or a related field, or equivalent.
  • Experience with website builders or content management systems (CMS), preferably Drupal.
  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS, and basic web design principles.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and a keen interest in user experience.
  • Ability to work independently to translate requirements into web solutions.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.

Nice to Have

  • Experience using Drupal or similar web platforms.
  • Knowledge of web accessibility standards and best practices.
  • Familiarity with basic graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Photoshop).
  • Experience supporting the build or launch of webpages for educational institutions.
  • Familiarity with higher education administration, including understanding the structure, processes, and employee functions.
  • Ability to assist in analyzing webpage traffic and user engagement metrics to inform improvements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related field.
