About the Role

The Business Development Executive at MSC Industrial Supply Co. works to improve MSC's market position and achieve financial growth by building key customer relationships, identifying business opportunities, negotiating and closing deals, and maintaining extensive knowledge of market conditions. The role involves collaborating with internal teams to increase sales opportunities, contracting solutions with medium and large manufacturing customers, and developing a pipeline of new business aligned with MSC's strategic goals. The position requires a thorough understanding of the marketplace and competitors, with a focus on solutions selling to directors and officers of client organizations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify, pursue, sign, and transition medium and large manufacturing customers through proactive prospecting and developing compelling value-based proposals and presentations.
  • Build broad prospect relationship networks, including senior-level contacts within customers with revenue potential of $500,000 to $5M annually.
  • Apply extensive solutions, product, financial, and market knowledge to sell complex accounts.
  • Research and qualify targeted account prospects, maintain a robust sales funnel, and demonstrate strategic ownership of business.
  • Manage content in sales funnel, win/loss data, launch status, and CRM platforms like SFDC to communicate business needs.
  • Engage with management levels and decision makers within prospect organizations to propose and secure new agreements, leveraging insight selling concepts.
  • Negotiate pricing and terms of new account agreements to maximize revenue and minimize risk.
  • Develop detailed financial models forecasting account performance and communicate expectations to leadership.
  • Coordinate with internal teams and resources to ensure rapid penetration and revenue growth of new accounts.
  • Maintain relationships with field leadership and customer support to meet customer needs and sales forecasts.
  • Prepare and submit sales and expense reports timely, manage travel and entertainment budgets, and utilize communication tools effectively.
  • Participate in professional development, special projects, and cross-functional teams, demonstrating a can-do attitude and proactive problem solving.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Business or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of successful sales and marketing experience, preferably in industrial, manufacturing, or distribution sectors.
  • Proven success in medium and large ($500K - $5M) sales.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Salesforce.com.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 60%.
  • Strong background in selling profitable solutions or services.
  • Knowledge of sales and prospecting techniques, with certification in Value Selling, Challenger Sales, or similar methodologies preferred.
  • Excellent sales, negotiation, relationship building, and closing skills.
  • Computer literacy and familiarity with e-business and supply chain concepts.
  • Strong business and financial acumen, including the ability to read financial statements and develop financial models.
  • Demonstrated project management and decision-making skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills at senior management levels.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing environments and market conditions.
  • Self-motivated with a proven track record of meeting and exceeding sales goals.
  • Ability to work independently and cross-functionally across multiple levels.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with supply chain operations, procurement, lean/process improvement.
  • Formal and informal leadership experience.
  • Potential to move into other functions such as category leadership or joint business planning.
  • P&L responsibility experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of successful sales experience in relevant sectors.
