About the Role

The Director of External Relations and Brand Strategy at Anythink is a leadership role focused on building and elevating the library's brand, strengthening community relationships, and developing strategic partnerships. The position involves overseeing brand communications across various media, guiding the Brand Strategy team, and serving as a spokesperson to promote the district's mission and initiatives. The role requires a creative, strategic, and collaborative leader passionate about community engagement, diversity, and innovation in library services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and strengthen Anythink's brand and community relationships by sharing the organization's story to inspire support from individuals, organizations, businesses, and foundations.
  • Lead the Brand Strategy team to develop and execute communications including social media, web, and print materials.
  • Develop long-term and short-term brand strategies aligned with district needs and vision.
  • Provide creative guidance, project management, and editorial direction for brand initiatives to ensure consistent messaging and impact.
  • Update and implement Anythink's brand guidelines to direct strategic communications, public relations, and branding campaigns.
  • Serve as Anythink's spokesperson on public relations matters, leading media relations efforts.
  • Identify and develop relationships with community stakeholders, partners, and sponsors to support the organization's goals.
  • Analyze performance metrics and adjust strategies to improve engagement and impact.
  • Develop and maintain digital presence through website, social media, and digital marketing channels.
  • Collect, analyze, and disseminate data to inform brand strategy decisions and tell the organization's story.
  • Develop crisis communication plans and oversee response strategies to protect and enhance the district's reputation.
  • Manage, mentor, and inspire the brand strategy and external relations teams, fostering a high-performance culture.
  • Establish and track key metrics for external relations efforts, providing reports and strategic recommendations to leadership.
  • Build collaborative relationships across departments and branches to support communication needs.
  • Recruit, hire, and retain a diverse team of employees and volunteers.
  • Manage the department's budget responsibly, overseeing development and active management of marketing funds.
  • Engage in community networking, including developing relationships with VIPs, board members, and community leaders.
  • Participate in district committees, contribute ideas, and take leadership roles as appropriate.
  • Perform physical tasks such as standing, walking, crouching, lifting up to 25 pounds, and pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds as part of library activities.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in brand strategy, marketing, or communications, with at least 3 years managing a team.
  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, business, or a related field.
  • Proven success in creating and executing integrated brand, marketing, and communications strategies, preferably in diverse communities.
  • Outstanding storytelling and creative skills, with the ability to distill complex ideas into compelling narratives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of managing multiple projects and meeting deadlines.
  • Tech-savvy with proficiency in Microsoft Office and online research tools.
  • Experience in reputation management and crisis communication.
  • High emotional intelligence and cultural competency.
  • Spanish speaking candidates preferred.

Nice to Have

  • Experience working in a library, nonprofit, or community organization on a national or global scale.
  • Knowledge of advertising across legacy and new media sources.
  • Experience developing and implementing crisis communication plans.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data to inform strategy.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, business, or related field.
  • 7+ years of relevant experience in brand strategy/marketing/communications.
  • Management experience with a team of employees.
