About the Role

The Patient Account Representative works in the Central Billing Office (CBO) providing billing services such as the processing and submission of patient charges and appropriate follow-up with insurance companies and patients. The role involves delivering outstanding service to both internal and external customers, primarily through telephone communication, and ensuring accurate billing and collections within a healthcare setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates proficient use of practice management software to update facility files and patient demographic information, ensure correct balance of charge and payment batches, and perform proper reconciliation.
  • Posts charges, payments, adjustments, and works unpostables, utilizing coding knowledge and understanding credit, collection, and zero pay work lists.
  • Maintains collections and follow-up account activity by organizing, tracking, filing, and documenting all correspondence.
  • Responds to patient billing and insurance inquiries, facilitating resolution of financial issues promptly.
  • Interprets billing slips and understands the Athena workflow dashboard.
  • Accurately completes payment/deposit batches with proper allocation of monies and reviews patient invoices and claims for accuracy before submission.
  • Prepares account history information for physician review or transfer to collection agencies.
  • Answers patient calls professionally and timely, projecting proper telephone etiquette and understanding when to release protected health information.
  • Displays professionalism, maintains a positive team attitude, and demonstrates dependability through attendance and punctuality.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two to four years of billing experience including ICD9, CPT coding, and medical terminology or related experience.
  • Experience operating multi-line phone systems, fax machines, photocopiers, and PCs.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel.
  • Ability to communicate professionally via internet and operate a PC efficiently.
  • Typing speed of 40 words per minute.
